The areas planted with onions in Egypt are about 8% of the total cultivated area in the world. The Egyptian production of onions is about 7% of the global production and 70% of the African production. The percentage of onion exports in Egypt is about 17% Of the quantities of the total onion crop that are exported worldwide.
The importance of the Egyptian onion is due to the fact that it appears early during the month of March, April and May, i.e. sometime before the appearance of European onions, which makes it important and a great scope in the Arab and international markets to be exported.
